ART STUDIO IL (INDEPENDENT LEARNING) COURSES INCLUDE: Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture (.5 credit). These courses are intended for the serious, competent, and independent student who cannot otherwise schedule into an art class. Prerequisite: Studio Level 3 of the same art discipline plus the written permission from instructor.

In Art 1 Culture, students will study famous artists, art periods, art cultures and the visual culture of the contemporary environment. Students will work with drawing and sculpture materials to gain a hands-on understanding of how artists of different periods explored and used materials to express their understanding of the world around them.

Students enrolled in Graphic Design 1 will be exposed to various facets of digital art and technology. They will learn to manipulate digital images and layout using the latest in software and technique. Graphic Design students will be expected to know and appropriate the principles of design as they work to solve problems in an ever-increasing visual world.
METALSMITHING 1

Metalsmithing 1 is an introduction to several different metals (copper, brass, nu-gold, sterling). Students will be taught to design and construct functional jewelry and purely aesthetic metal art pieces using several different metalworking techniques. Emphasis is on wire manipulations, piercing, and finishing metal surfaces. There will also be a limited introduction to torch use in fusing beads on wire and beginning soldering techniques. Students will be charged additional fees if they opt to work with sterling silver.

This introduction to painting focuses on basic painting technique in watercolor, multimedia, and acrylics. Art history and appreciation is taught through discussions, videos, group research presentations and critiques.

Digital Photography 1 is an introduction to photography. Students learn to take aesthetically pleasing images using their digital cameras, and learn how to make basic corrections and enhancements with the use of Photoshop software. They will be exposed to the history of photography and appreciation through selected chapter readings, videos, field trips, and class discussions. Students are encouraged to shoot much more, and print many more images than basic requirements. They are responsible
for learning the handling of their own personal camera equipment through use of their owner’s manual, manufacturer’s technical support, and website. Students may desire to purchase additional supplies for their respective projects.
SCULPTURE 1

Sculpture 1 exposes students to a variety of 3D media such as: plaster, clay, metal, stone, wood and found objects. The students will use these media in a number of problem solving scenarios. They will also study sculpture from a historical/culture perspective and gain insight into its evocative qualities as a three dimensional form. They will learn to create their own pieces that communicate meaning through the use of the elements and principles of design.

Ceramics Studio offers levels 2-4. These higher levels of study include the continuing study of the history, techniques, aesthetics, products, and the meanings of the ceramic arts. In these advanced sections of Graphic Design, the student will be expected to solve problems of increasing difficulty. They will be required to research and develop specific designs for specific needs in the school and surrounding community. They will gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of Graphic Design through the ages to its place of importance in visual culture. As the student progresses on this track he/she will become greater prepared for continued education in this competitive field.

The focus is on building painting techniques and fundamentals in a variety of compositional challenges and to define a direction and personal concentration. Photography Studio offers levels 2 through 4. Students learn to use their 35 mm manually controlled cameras, how to process black and white film, and how to print black and white photographs. These higher levels of study provide the student additional experience in producing art prints, plus introduction to auxiliary photo techniques. Emphasis in all levels is on refined craftsmanship. Each level offers progressively more challenging techniques and photo composition problems, and may be repeated 3 times. Students may desire to purchase additional supplies for their respective projects.

These advanced studio courses will progress toward increased student independence. The Student will begin by exploring different media and content, eventually, however, they will arrive at a preferred medium and area of content. Advanced Placement Studio Art

The College Board offers two art portfolio exam options:
3D Design Exam, and Drawing Exam.

AP Ceramics allows students to concentrate on his/her individual artwork. The course helps students develop a 3-D portfolio for the AP exam, college scholarships, and entrance to an art program at the university level. The AP student will be expected to dedicate many outside of classroom hours to discover his/her own path as s/he completes college-level work. Students in AP Ceramics must also register for AP Design Seminar.

3-D DESIGN SEMINAR

What influences the stock market changes? What influences prices to change? Why is it sometimes difficult to obtain a loan and other times it is easy? This course takes a look at the economy from the viewpoint of consumers, businesses, and government. We look at how business influences the economy; how consumer skills including personal money management, taxes, and investing influence consumer decisions; and how government issues such as the money supply impact the economy and consumers. Use of computer simulations enhances understanding of these issues. Successful completion of Introduction to Business fulfills the consumer education graduation requirement.

Financial education is central to helping students make better decisions for them now and in the future. This course concentrates on the generally accepted accounting principles. Topics include: analyzing, journalizing and posting transactions, worksheets, basic financial statements, and closing processes. A grade of “A” or “B” in Accounting 1 fulfills the requirements for Accounting Procedures I (ACC 112) at the College of Lake County. Students are required to purchase a workbook.

AP Computer Science A

Are you ready for the challenge of a high-level programming language? Java is required learning for some engineering and all computer science majors at the college level. Students who have strong problem solving and logical thinking skills are ready for Java. Java offers a greater challenge than Visual Basic Programming, and has less of a focus on graphical user interfaces to prepare for AP content. Topics include: data types, flow control, algorithm development, methods, classes, interfaces, exception handling, and recursion. This course will prepare you for the Computer Science A exam. A good score on the exam can grant you college credit in computer science at some universities. Although students will have use of the computer lab at school, students will benefit from having a computer at home to complete unfinished programs. Work outside of class varies per student based on how well he/she can complete programming assignments in class. Homework is assigned to strengthen skills.

How much time do you spend on the internet? How can you communicate your ideas in a fun, dynamic way? How can you get published at little cost? Don’t just surf the internet, become a part of it. Develop fully functional web sites that actually exist on the web. Just about everyone uses the internet for research, shopping, or entertainment. But how do you get people to your web site from the millions that are available? Web design will show you how to use color, images, animated graphics, sound, video, text, e-mail, and organizational techniques to create outstanding web sites that you and everyone else can see. HTML coding, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks will be your primary tools. You’ll leave the class with your own free web space and sites for everyone in the world to see.

Have you ever wondered how a Television show is put together? This course covers the basics of TV Production. Students will work all the positions in front of and behind the camera in an authentic TV Studio where they will create multiple talk shows and complete news broadcasts (anchors, weather, sports, commercials, etc). In addition students will produce original video stories where they will learn how to complete all the stages of a video story- planning, shooting with a camera, and editing on computer. The class is taught with a “hands on” approach to learning all about TV Production. No experience is necessary.
TV APPRENTICESHIP

This class begins where the beginning TV class leaves off. Students will create a daily news broadcast that is aired to the whole school each day. In addition they will create original video stories that include concepts of video storytelling and video journalism. In this class students also have the option of working on feature news stories as well as DVD yearbook stories which will be placed on the school’s DVD yearbook at the end of the year. Other class projects can include director centered multiple camera broadcasts of various live Mustang sports and theatre events, as well as visits to working television studios in Chicago. Because of the breadth of different projects, as well as increasing student skill levels; this course can be repeated for additional credit.

This is a beginning course that is designed for the novice sewer who is interested in learning basic sewing terminology and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the hand and machine sewing skills necessary to complete five projects. This course will cover the effect of different styles, lines and colors on an individual. A study of fashion through the ages, an overview of the apparel industry, and careers in the clothing field will also be explored. Students are responsible for purchasing their own patterns, fabric and notions to complete a minimum of three individual projects.

A variety of information about the global fashion industry and its impact on personal fashion choices will be explored. This course is designed to give students information about families, pregnancy, prenatal development, the baby’s arrival, and the development of the child after birth. The physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of the child will be explored. The focus of this course is based on research-based nurturing and parenting skills, including brain development research, that support positive development of children. Students will participate in activities and projects that directly relate to children.

Orientation to Building Trades will provide students with an overall exposure to materials, processes, systems, and technology used in modern residential construction. Blueprint reading, estimating, site layout, rough framing, wiring, and plumbing will be covered with a text and aspects of each performed through hands on application. This course will also explore architectural design (CAD), blueprints and detailed construction drawings. Students will execute these drawings into full scale projects. Safety will be stressed, as students will be using hand tools and power tools to complete projects. This course will prepare students for future experiences at Tech Campus, trade school, or a four year college.

Basic music-reading skills are not required but are highly recommended for the best experience. All students will need to supply their own nylon or steel string acoustic guitar.

BEGINNING TV

Have you ever wondered how a Television show is put together? This course covers the basics of TV Production. Students will work all the positions in front of and behind the camera in an authentic TV Studio where they will create multiple talk shows and complete news broadcasts (anchors, weather, sports, commercials, etc). In addition students will produce original video stories where they will learn how to complete all the stages of a video story- planning, shooting with a camera, and editing on computer. The class is taught with a “hands on” approach to learning all about TV Production. No experience is necessary.
TV APPRENTICESHIP

This class begins where the beginning TV class leaves off. Students will create a daily news broadcast that is aired to the whole school each day. In addition they will create original video stories that include concepts of video storytelling and video journalism. In this class students also have the option of working on feature news stories as well as DVD yearbook stories which will be placed on the school’s DVD yearbook at the end of the year. Other class projects can include director centered multiple camera broadcasts of various live Mustang sports and theatre events, as well as visits to working television studios in Chicago. Because of the breadth of different projects, as well as increasing student skill levels; this course can be repeated for additional credit.
