MHS SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Key Understandings  
       
To fulfill our educational vision, the Social Studies Department of Mundelein High School is committed to ensuring that all students:  
•  Develop an understanding of past events in order to comprehend present issues.  
•  Prepare to be informed and involved citizens in our democracy.  
•  Explore other cultures in order to understand their role in an interconnected global community.  
•  Develop the ability to analyze the motivations and consequences of human behavior.  

 

Key Skills  
       
The Social Studies Department is committed to helping all students develop the following skills to contribute to their academic success:  
  Reading comprehension  
 

Includes analysis and identification of primary and secondary sources, both historical and contemporary

 
  Verbal communication  
 

Includes ability to participate meaningfully in classroom discussions and debates

 
  Critical thinking and analysis  
  Use of technology
Internet, power point, video/audio product)

 
 
  Written communication  
 

Including but not limited to expository and persuasive writing.

 
  Research skills

Academic vocabulary development


Analysis of maps, charts, graphs, and visual text
 
 

 

Instruction  
       
Students will develop skills and knowledge through the following pedagogical modalities:

Environment  
       
Teachers and students will contribute to the classroom environment by fulfilling the following expectations:  
•  Students and teachers will help create an environment that upholds the values of trust, communication, responsibility, and respect.  
•  Students will be active, engaged learners in a supportive, open, challenging, and structured academic environment.  
•  Students will participate in a learning community that embraces its own diversity.
