Dear Jazz Educators,
Please accept our invitation to the Mundelein Invitational 2012 on Saturday, March 10, 2012. The Mundelein Invitational is unique jazz festival for high school and middle school jazz bands and combos. The festival is focused on jazz education and features an extended clinic for each performing group.
The Mundelein Jazz Festival, now know as the Mundelein Invitational, is one of the longest-running high school jazz festivals in the state of Illinois. This year’s adjudicators and clinicians include excellent jazz educators such as John Rapson, Don Owens, Brent Sandy, Steve Grismore, Jim Drier and more. Each year we aim to make it a positive, valuable learning experience that is always centered on jazz and jazz education.
Categories - Each year, the jazz portion of the Mundelein Invitational features four separate categories:
- Middle School Jazz Labs (2nd bands)
- Middle School Jazz Ensembles (top bands)
- High School Jazz Labs (2nd bands)
- High School Combos
- High School Jazz Ensembles (top bands)
Each performing ensemble will receive recorded comments as well as an extended clinic with one of the festival clinicians. At the end of the festival, the judges will select an Honor Band will be from the High School Jazz Ensemble and Middle School Jazz Ensemble categories.
Honor Bands
Bands selected as “Honor Bands” will receive free admission to next year’s festival and perform in a featured performance slot with one of the festival adjudicators as a guest artist.
Timing and Programming - Participating bands perform in a 25-minute time slot which includes performance and setup time. There are no limits for programming other than the 25-minute time slot. You may perform as many or as few tunes as you would like.
Adjudication and Clinics - Each band will be observed and evaluated by a panel of three outstanding judges. Immediately following a band's performances they will have a clinic with one of three clinicians (separate from the judges) who will have observed their performance. Please note revisions from previous years based on director feedback.
Guest Artist and Clinics – This year’s festival will feature a mid-day performance by the premier jazz ensemble from the University of Iowa, Johnson County Landmark under the direction of John Rapson, featuring several of Iowa’s jazz faculty. This performance is free with festival admission.
We hope you will consider joining us for this excellent event!
