Three seniors win full-ride Chick Evans scholarships

April 8, 2013

James Freely, Victor Magana and Adam Fialkowski are all smiles thinking about their full scholarships.

Mundelein High School has had several winners of the prestigious Chick Evans Scholarship in the past, but this year THREE students were awarded the scholarship:  Adam Fialkowski, James Freely and Victor Magana. All three will use their full-ride scholarships to study at top-notch colleges and universities.
The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for golf caddies that is renewable for up to four years.   Selected applicants must have a strong caddie record, excellent grades, outstanding character and demonstrated financial need.
Fialkowski caddied at the Ivanhoe Club and will attend Indiana University as a business/finance major. Freely caddied at Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove and will attend Northern Illinois University as a business management major. Magana also caddied at Twin Orchard and will major in Biology at Marquette University.
All three young men are excited to begin their new lives at the schools they have chosen and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of this program. “This is a chance of a lifetime,” Magana said.
Charles E. “Chick” Evans, Jr. was a leading amateur golfer in the 1910’s and 1920’s. He was the first amateur to win the US Open and US Amateur in one year, which he did in 1916. In addition to his golf career, Evans is known for sponsoring the college scholarship for qualified caddies.
Since 1930, when the first two Evans Scholars enrolled at Northwestern University, more than 10,000 outstanding young men and women have been awarded Evans Scholarships. Most recipients attend one of the 14 universities across the nation where the Evans Scholars Foundation owns and operates a Scholarship House. At those houses, students live and work together cooperatively. Each House elects its own officers, runs social and service activities, and participates in campus programs. The Evans Scholars Chapters have earned a reputation on each campus for scholastic achievement and excellence in community service.
