In an effort to allow for construction at Mundelein High School to proceed as effectively as possible, the District 120 School Board on Aug. 12 adjusted the school year calendar for the next two years.

Next year’s school calendar will run from Sept. 8, 2026  to June 10, 2027. The following year, it will run from Sept. 7, 2027 to June 9, 2028. The changes will allow for a 15-week summer in 2026 followed by a 13-week summer in 2027. A typical summer in District 120 is 11 weeks long.

“MHS will maintain the same number of instructional days,” said Dr. Corey Tafoya, Superintendent of Mundelein School Districts 120 and 75. “But we needed to extend the next two summers to allow our construction team to perform the heaviest work during a time when the students are not on campus. This change will not only keep our construction on schedule, but help it to be completed as safely as possible.”

The $199.5 million building improvement project is being funded largely through a $149.5 million building bond referendum supported by voters in November 2024. Work began on the project in March 2025 and is expected to take at least three years to complete.

Some of the work, such as the addition of eight classrooms on the school’s west side, will begin during the summer with less intrusive work continuing during the school year.

During the summer of 2026, work will begin on the new competition gym, field house, student commons and more. Projects during the summer of 2027 include expanding music classrooms, adding new Career Technical Education classrooms, relocating the media center and renovating the north gym.

Five months into the construction, the project is on schedule and under budget.

District administrators have been working with staff during the past six months to study all the possible challenges of a calendar change. Now that the calendar changes have been approved, MHS staff will begin planning for any adjustments to minimize the impact on students and families.
