A familiar face will take over the reins at Mundelein High School when current MHS Principal Alex Taylor steps down from the job in the spring. The District 120 Board of Education on Tuesday promoted current Associate Principal Stevee Libert as the next MHS principal.
“Stevee has proven herself to be very passionate in every role she’s held at MHS over the past decade,” said District 120 Superintendent Corey Tafoya. “Her collaborative leadership and student-centered approach fit exactly what we were looking for in our next principal. We’re excited to be able to promote one of our own.”
Libert, who came to Mundelein as the Choir Director in 2015, has also served as the Summer School Principal and Assistant Principal of Student Life. She began her current job as Associate Principal in July 2025.
Taylor announced in August that she will leave MHS at the end of the academic school year in order to continue raising her young and growing family. She has served as principal since 2022.
More than 25 individuals including students, teachers, school support staff, building and district leaders led the selection process. They searched for a dynamic, student-centered leader who possessed the following characteristics: vision, integrity, visibility, drive for instructional excellence, and an ability to strengthen the school culture.
Libert was chosen from a pool of 22 applicants from throughout the U.S. including Lake and DuPage counties, Colorado, Texas, California, and Indiana. The group interviewed six semi-finalists, and selected two finalists before making their final selection.
Libert graduated from the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She earned her Master’s Degree in School Leadership - Principal Preparation at Concordia University Chicago and is currently working on her doctorate of education at Northern Illinois University, with a focus on Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
From 2019-2022, Libert served as the Vice President of the Mundelein Education Association. Other service includes participation in the following committees: Restorative Practices; PLC Advisory; Attendance; District Equity Leadership Team; Grading for Equity Steering; Evaluation; E-Learning; and the Illinois Directors of Student Activities Executive Board.
Libert worked as a student-teacher at Naperville North High School and a pair of middle schools in Buffalo Grove and Wheeling before coming to Mundelein High School. Her past experience also includes working as the Assistant Director, then Artistic Director, of the Palatine Children’s Chorus. Libert also volunteers at CASA Lake County, an organization that protects the best interests of youth who have been considered to be abused, neglected or dependent.
A graduate of Fremd High School, Libert celebrated her 10th anniversary with MHS in the spring of 2025.
