Mundelein High School continues to prove its status as one of the best high schools not only in the state but across the country. For the eighth consecutive year, Mundelein High School has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report in its 2026 “Best High Schools” report.

“We’re very proud to achieve this recognition again,” District 120 Superintendent Corey Tafoya said. “This is a testament to our dedicated staff, hard-working students and a School Board that is driven to create the best opportunities for students. We get better every year, and we will continue to improve moving forward.” 

Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.

According to the report, Mundelein High School’s college preparation and graduation rate were keys to the school’s success. MHS was ranked 68th in Illinois in the report’s College Readiness Index. And the MHS graduation rate of 95 percent was “well above the state median,” according to U.S. News.

AP enrollment and the number of students taking AP exams at MHS continues to grow, and student success remains exceptionally strong. Nearly half of MHS students took at least one AP exam, with 89.4 percent earning a score of 3 or higher. Across all MHS grade levels, of the students who took an AP exam in spring 2026, 90 percent earned a 3 or higher, a score recognized for college credit at many colleges and universities.

The strong AP numbers come as no surprise. The College Board honored Mundelein High School with a Bronze recognition on the 2023 AP School Honor Roll and a Silver Distinction in both 2024 and 2025. The College Board recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results from students while broadening participation.
