Mundelein High School senior Andrew Weaver has earned the prestigious Chick Evans Scholarship, a full tuition and housing, four-year college scholarship for golf caddies.
Weaver, who plans to study advertising at the University of Illinois, was nominated for the award by the Ivanhoe Country Club where he has caddied for the past four years. The scholarship is given by the Evans Scholars Foundation and is awarded based on a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.
“He’s very strong, both academically and athletically,” said MHS Counselor Samantha Smigielski. “He’s very self-driven and very deserving of this scholarship.”
Weaver, a captain of the MHS Boys Cross Country team and a state qualifier in track, will graduate from MHS in May Sum Cum Laude. He has been on the “A” honor roll every semester at MHS and currently holds a (weighted) 4.27 GPA. He was also named to the Conference All-Academic Team in Track. Weaver has participated as a member of SALT, the National Honor Society and Link Crew.
“I’ve always had high hopes for myself,” he said. “I’m just really happy to be reaching my goals.”
For more than 90 years, the Western Golf Association has overseen the Evans Scholars Program, which is among the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship programs. It is named in honor of legendary amateur golfer Chick Evans, whose charitable legacy was to help send deserving caddies to college.
