Year after year, Mundelein High School continues to build on its success in academic proficiency, college readiness and graduation rate. It hasn’t gone unnoticed.

U.S. News & World Report once again has ranked MHS among the best high schools in the nation. It is the seventh consecutive year Mundelein has received the recognition.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for both our teaching staff and our students,” said District 120 Superintendent Corey Tafoya. “It’s not a surprise to anyone here that we’re being recognized again. But it’s a testament to the people in our building that we continue to improve year after year.”

U.S. News ranks high schools on various factors including college readiness, college curriculum breadth, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance and graduation rate.

The graduation rate at MHS, which had lingered in the mid- to high-80s until just a few years ago, rose to 95 percent in 2024 and 94 percent in 2025.

Much of the success at Mundelein High School over the past five years is due to the improvements in advanced placement (AP) testing. MHS had a 42 percent increase in the number of students taking AP exams from 2021-2025.  In that same time, the number of students receiving a passing score on their AP exam increased from 56 percent in 2021 to 85 percent in 2025.

For its achievements in AP testing, the College Board honored Mundelein High School with a Bronze recognition on the 2023 AP School Honor Roll and a Silver Distinction in 2024.

The academic trends show good promise for MHS in the coming years. Of the students who earned honors in English 1 last year, 90 percent enrolled in Honors English 2 and 82 percent of them earned an A or B. And 90 percent of the students who received a grade of A in earned honors biology last year are currently enrolled in honors chemistry or AP chemistry.

Another positive trend at MHS is the number of students who receive dual credit hours at the College of Lake County. In the last five years, MHS the number of students receiving dual credit rose from 75 to 325 in 2025.
