The MHS newspaper staff learned of their awards on the last day of school.

The staff of the student-produced school newspaper, the Mustang, ended the school year with 15 awards from the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s Newspaper & Digital Media Contest, Division 3.

“It’s really exciting to have our hard work recognized, and I’m so proud of how everyone on the staff has grown this year as writers and journalists,” Co-editor-in-chief Ashley Cline ‘22 said.

The staff received six staff awards, including two second place awards, one for Best Overall Design and the other for Best Front-Page Design. They took third place for Best Centerspread Story Package and three honorable mentions for Best Website, Best Hybrid Publication and Best Overall Publication.

“It was validating to be recognized and a great end to the year as a graduated senior,” Co-editor-in-chief Tress Dorfler ‘22 said. “I couldn't be prouder of the staff as a whole and can't wait to see how they'll continue to grow next year.”

The newspaper staff learned of the awards on the last day of school - the same day they held an end-of-year celebration and reviewed the last print edition of the year, the senior issue.

“The 2021-22 staff was filled with talented reporters and writers, especially considering many of them were new to staff this year,” Adviser Michelle Didzbalis said. “They showed an eagerness for the journalism process that led to  a lot of thoughtful and engaging stories and publications this year as proven by the awards received.”
