    Hispanic career panel highlights opportunities over obstacles

    When Art Gonzales was in high school, he wanted to become a doctor. But he didn’t think he was smart enough. So his dream faded away in time. He didn’t have any other aspirations and went to community college without a plan. It would be six years before he earned a college degree and eight more years before he started his career.     MHS inducts 75 members to National Honor Society

    Mundelein High School inducted 61 students into the National Honor Society (NHS) in a ceremony held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4 at the high school. The inductees were chosen by a faculty selection committee based on the four principles of NHS, namely character, scholarship, leadership and service. NHS Faculty Advisor Aaron Dame and NHS Chapter President Cameron Gilbert opened the ceremony followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by NHS Member Bianca Rico.

    During his time at Mundelein High School, Chris Wetteland may not have imagined himself teaching the science class. But 28 years removed from his graduation, that’s exactly what Dr. Wetteland did. The former student was in town during Homecoming Weekend to accept an award as one of seven Distinguished Alumni. On Friday, he made a stop in the high school, visited with MHS Science Department Chair David Greenwood, and led a portion of Jackie Hogan’s Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry class.

    MHS honors distinguished alumni

    Mundelein High School held its 2021 Distinguished Alumni ceremony and recognition Saturday with a luncheon at the District 120 Office Building. The program honors alumni who have excelled in a chosen profession, community service, civic involvement and more. This year MHS was proud to honor Larry Markus (Class of ‘67), Chad Vale (Class of ‘74), Rick Witt (Class of “00), Chris Wetteland (Class of ‘93), Max Petersen (Class of ‘06), Michael Gunther (Class of ‘95) and Lawrence Maligaya.

    As JoAnne Celba leaned out the window of the white 1966 Mustang to wave during the Mundelein High School Homecoming Parade, the trip down Hawley Street must have brought back plenty of memories. The Vernon Hills resident was part of the first class to graduate MHS after the school opened exactly 60 years ago. One thing she remembered was how her friends were upset about leaving Libertyville High School after the 1960-61 school year.

    National Merit Scholarship Corp commends three MHS students

    Three students at Mundelein High School received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Issac Fuksman, Elaina Kasamis and Ethan Nelsen join 34,000 students nationwide as Commended Students and are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, these students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition

    District 120 School Board earns governance recognition honor

    The District 120 School Board earned state recognition for their effective governance behaviors, the Illinois Association of School Boards announced. The Board was one of 35 Illinois school districts honored with the School Board Governance Recognition. It recognizes the Board’s effective governance behaviors and their commitment toward obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively govern the district.

    MHS art teacher named best in state

    The Illinois Art Education Association named MHS teacher Jonathan Pruc the 2021 IAEA High School Art Educator of the Year. The group’s awards and scholarship committee cited Pruc’s professional performance, service and leadership as exemplary. “Jonathan is an educator who thinks outside the box, looks at art and education through a critical lens and constantly works to connect and engage his students in their learning,” according to a statement from the IAEA.
