    Timing, strategy behind MHS referendum bonds saves taxpayers more than $7 million

    Due to good timing and a favorable interest rate, the building bonds issued as part of the Mundelein High School Facilities Improvement referendum will save District 120 taxpayers more than $7 million over the life of the bond repayments. The project was approved by taxpayers in a referendum in November 2024. The sale of bonds was approved by the District 120 School Board on Jan. 13, meaning taxpayers will notice the increase on their property tax bills starting in May.

    MHS senior named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

    ​Mundelein High School senior Paige Prochnow has been named a finalist in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program. Later this spring, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will select some 6,870 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of finalists. Prochnow was named one of more than 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists last September, representing less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the U.S.

    MHS School Board approves hiring of new assistant superintendent

    The Mundelein District 120 School Board on March 10 approved hiring Dr. Art Vallicelli as the new Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools, effective July 1. Vallicelli, currently the principal of Woodstock High School, will provide district-level leadership in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning for grades 6-12.

    MHS to host 59th Annual Mundelein Jazz Invitational

    The 59th Annual Mundelein Jazz Invitational will be held on Saturday, March 14, at Mundelein High School. This is the longest-running instrumental jazz festival in the Chicago area and will welcome 80 performing ensembles from 46 different high schools and middle schools. The first performance of the day begins at 8 a.m. and continues in five different venues until 6:30 p.m.

    Foundation named for former student donates to MHS music programs

    A foundation named for a former MHS band student has donated $5,000 to the school music program. Christina Hopkins presented the check on Feb. 27 to MHS Band Directors Andy Sturgeon and Jerry Shelato on behalf of the Brandon Michael Lee Foundation. Her late son Brandon graduated from MHS in 2013 and was a band student during his time at Mundelein High School.

The Special Education Leadership Award was presented by the Illinois Alliance of Administrators of Special Education (IAASE) during the group’s Winter Conference in Champaign.

    MHS Senior receives DAR Good Citizen Award

    MHS senior Ella Novotney was one of four area high school students to receive a 2025 Good Citizen student award from the Ansel Brainerd Cook Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The awards were presented Feb. 15 during the chapter meeting at the Libertyville Civic Center. The DAR Good Citizens program was created in 1934 and is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
