AP & Honors Additional Summer Reading Requirement

Honors English 2

In addition to the choice reading book, read Anthem by Ayn Rand. Be prepared to discuss both books with your peers in August.

Honors English 3

In addition to your choice reading book, please read one of the following titles over the summer:

  • A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
  • There There by Tommy Orange
  • The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez
  • They Called Us Enemy by George Takei
  • Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Each of these books offers a powerful perspective on what it means to grow up, belong, and search for identity in America. You’ll encounter stories told from a range of voices — including Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, and LGBTQ+ characters — each navigating the promises and contradictions of the American experience.

As you read, consider this guiding question: In what ways does this book expand or challenge your understanding of American identity?

Be ready to discuss both your choice reading book and your summer selection with your classmates in August. We’re excited to see the insights you bring to our conversations!

Honors English 4

In addition to the choice reading book, choose a nonfiction title that presents an alternative/new way to think about the world.  While reading, consider the following guiding question: What is the importance of alternative thinking? Below are a few titles we recommend:

  • Think Like a Freak by Steven Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
  • When to Rob a Bank by Steven Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
  • What if? by Randall Munroe
  • Stiff by Mary Roach

Be prepared to discuss both books with your peers in August.
