The D120 Transition Center defines Independent Living Skills as the abilities that support successful, independent functioning in adulthood. Beginning at each participant’s current level of independence, the focus is on building the skills needed to meet individual goals and needs. Participants are empowered to make informed choices, develop self-direction, and take an active role in shaping their lives while meaningfully engaging in their communities.
Functional Academics provides a curriculum that connects classroom learning with real-world experiences. Instruction emphasizes the development of independent living and vocational skills, with a focus on communication and social skills practiced across a variety of authentic community settings.

Through Work-Based Learning, participants engage in hands-on job training to develop essential employability skills. They participate daily at a variety of community job training sites, where real-world experiences reinforce workplace expectations and responsibilities. At each site, participants work alongside a D120 Transition Center employment specialist who provides guidance and support in building both technical (hard skills) and interpersonal (soft) skills, helping them prepare for successful employment.
